Why You’ll Never Hear Me Say “Arch Your Back”

Arch your back!” might just be the most common boudoir posing cue out there.

But not at Embodied Art Boudoir!

Because, honestly, it makes me cringe sooooo hard.  When are you told this in real life?! NEVER. So it makes women panic & look awkward.

I take my role as hype woman & poser extraordinaire seriously! I want everyone to feel natural in their photoshoot, so I have undertaken extensive training in anatomy & learned posing from my yoga teacher training, paired with over 10 years of practicing yoga asana (the poses), which makes me approach boudoir differently than the typical boudoir photographer.

So what will we do differently?

Why You’ll Never Hear Me Say “Arch Your Back…”

Why do you need to hear that when these women achieve these INCREDIBLE looks without arching their backs? 👇

Like, c’mon!!! 😍

In EAB studio, I absolutely prioritize the well-being AND safety of my clients. That’s why I steer clear of advising them to “arch their back” during their session and there are several key reasons for this

Spinal Health

From an anatomical standpoint, arching the back often leads to concentrating stress on a specific part of the spine, typically the mid to lower back. This can be particularly problematic for individuals with spinal issues like herniated or slipped discs.

However, folk with even the healthiest spines can find this position burdensome & painful. I’m conscious of the long-term impact such poses can have & always opt for spine-friendly alternatives! You never have to stay or even get into ANY pose in our sessions that hurts or feels uncomfortable. Never ever.

Aesthetic Concerns

Aesthetically speaking, an overly arched back doesn’t actually achieve the graceful or strong appearance that many of my clients are going for. It’s important to me that they not only feel good but also look good in their poses, maintaining a natural & balanced posture. I want you to look hot, not like you’re in pain.

Effective Coaching Methods

My goal is to guide my clients with precise & clear instructions. Simply telling someone to “arch their back” is pretty vague which can lead to incorrect posture or pain. My approach is all about the details that really help my clients understand & achieve the correct alignment & form. It’s easier & clients can get the most out of their pose & session.

So… What Is The Alternative?

You might be thinking: “Okay so you won’t make me arch my back. So how can I look sexy, liberated, AND open?!”

One thing about EAB: you’re getting the photos you dreamt of. Because you deserve it & you are an absolute masterpiece.

So, how do I help you get a beautiful curve in your back, lifted chest, and orgasmic-looking arches!?

It’s actually quite simple!  Here are some of the most useful & common queues I support my clients with:

  • “Breathe into your chest”
  • “Lift your heart/chest”
  • “Lean back into your shoulders”
  • “Pull your shoulders down/back”
  • “Pull belly button back” (To engage the abdominal muscles & lend your spine support, not to shrink your lovely belly)

(This feels so GOOD!)

Instead of bringing pressure & compression into your spine (and potentially causing pain down the road), these cues help you lengthen & decompress the spine.

They help you find spaciousness in your body, allowing you to feel more present in a pose, rather than holding back a grimace, gripping, or tightening in tension.

These cues will support you to open your heart space, allowing more space for self-love & compassion into your experience.

They actually feel good in your body, which translates to you looking more natural, euphoric, and at ease in your images.

Most importantly… they make you look sexy as hell!!

These cues make your torso expand & make the natural curve in your back pronounced, without compromising your spine’s integrity.

You Shouldn’t Be In Pain After A Boudoir Photoshoot…

….You’ll probably be a bit sore, but that’s a different matter altogether 😉

But seriously, pain is a big no-no. I support bodies of all abilities & capabilities in posing that works for you. This shoot is ALL about you & you should never have to do anything that feels even a little bit uncomfortable. I strive to learn all about your body’s needs & boundaries well ahead of the shoot and I hope you will feel safe to share with me, so I can make your experience as authentic & safe as possible for you.

If you’re worried about aggravating an injury or being held back by a physical limitation & that has been holding you back from booking your boudoir photoshoot, I’d love to have a chat about it to find out how I can best support you!

Why?

Because I don’t work with all my clients through a standardised pose list. I really do care deeply about your body and want you to feel safe & respected at every step of this experience. I’m very good at customizing the posing to accommodate all bodies and any of their unique quirks!
