I have been fascinated by aura photography lately. Which makes sense, as a photographer driven by the desire to go beyond skin deep and see someone’s spirit.
This summer when my BFF Melissa came to visit me, we ended up getting our aura photos done! It was a really cool experience. We went to the Aura Weaver popup at Ritual Cravt, which is in Wheat Ridge, a suburb of Denver, CO.
What’s an Aura Photo?
Have you ever heard of Kirlian photography? Maybe you’ve seen a picture.
Kirlian photography captures electrical coronal discharges of a subject connected to a high voltage source. Don’t worry – it’s not enough to be dangerous!
An aura photo is a Kirlian photo of a living being! Your electrical coronal discharge emanates off your body in an ‘aura’ visible when the film is connected to you physically via conductors.
What are the conductors? They’re hand plates! I’ll explain in the next section.
Many people believe this electrical coronal discharge represents a person’s aura, qi (or chi), and energy – different cultures and traditions have different words for it. I believe the equivalent in the yogic tradition would be the Pranamaya Kosha.
I find aura photography to be a fascinating tool for introspection and insight about your past, present, or future.
How do you take an Aura Photo?
To take an aura photo, there are 2 parts.
First, you sit down and put your hands on boxes with metal hand prints on them. In front of you is a camera with a light. The camera takes the photo, which only takes a millisecond.
Second, the hand boxes process your aura. The aura part takes longer, so after your photo is taken you sit there for a few more seconds.
When we did our joint picture, me and Melissa each put our outer hand on one box to get a joint aura reading. I was on the left – so my left hand was on the left box. Her right hand was on the right box.
Denver Aura Photo Reading
Once the film is developed, it’s time for the reading!
The reading is where the meaning behind the colors and shapes in your aura is revealed to you.
But before the aura reading, our reader used an animal spirit oracle deck to first pull a card and read the description for that animal.
For my animal spirit card, she pulled a Phoenix. An animal of transformation, rebirth, and refinement in the fire. I resonated so strongly with her reading! I’ve just undergone a major physical change and I can feel it trigger a spiritual transformation into more ease & gratitude in all parts of my life.

I won’t get into the details of the colors and meanings, but they’re easy to find online if you’re curious.
I was most fascinated by the small dots around and over me. My reader revealed these were spirit guides (the purple ones outside) and my ancestors (the red and purple over my body).
Hearing this, tears sprung to my eyes, as that bright red spot of support was emanating from my late grandmother’s necklace and resting right over my heart. I miss my grandmothers and it’s comforting to be reminded of their existence.
After my reading was over, Melissa received her reading and we did our joint reading. I’ll share our joint aura here below, it was so beautiful!!! These colors signified trust, loyalty, intuition, love, inspiration, creativity, all sorts of beautiful things I share with my best friend 💞
The aura photo experience was interesting, energizing, and illuminating. Our reader spoke about how it can offer us a mirror to reflect on the dominant qualities in our lives. It can show us areas where we can trust more, or work on healing.
I also have a new mini obsession – color. Thinking about how color can reveal & evoke certain energies or emotional states.
I’ve revisited some Feng Sui principles around color meaning and placement in the home to kick start my home office decoration. After a year in my new home, I haven’t done anything with my office and this experience gave me the inspired kick start I needed! I just ordered some new curtains and pillows to totally re-energize the space.
And I’d really love to unlock my ability to see auras. It sounds like such an interesting thing to see!
