Why I Became a Boudoir Photographer

Curious as to how someone could end up in this profession? Why exactly would someone working in tech end up taking photos of scantily clad women for a living?
Well first off, what I do is a lot more than that! A nudge from a friend and one disastrous boudoir photoshoot of my own later, I found my passion and my purpose.
Here’s the story behind why I became a boudoir photographer…

A Push In The Right Direction
We all have those friends who see our potential before we do, and I owe mine for nudging me into boudoir photography.
I shot my first boudoir session (at their insistence!), and it instantly clicked. I saw the beauty in this genre—the raw intimacy, the transformation that can occur, and the pure celebration of the human form.
But I also witnesesed the flaws—stiff, lifeless poses, a lack of diversity in size, age, and skin tones, and an industry that often made women feel like a commodity instead of empowering them.

A Hard Lesson
To truly understand the experience from a client’s perspective, I booked my own boudoir session for my 30th birthday with a well-known company that had great reviews. I hoped it would be empowering.
Spoiler alert: It wasn’t.
Despite all the glossy marketing about empowerment, I walked away feeling the exact opposite—uncomfortable, unseen, and disconnected.
The staff wasn’t rude or unprofessional, but they were just following a formula: bring in a client, go through the motions, take the photos, sell the packages, and repeat.
They had an assembly-line approach, squeezing in as many clients as possible within a short timeframe.
While that might work for other types of photography, boudoir is a deeply personal experience that requires trust and care. Rushing through it strips away the very essence of what it’s supposed to be about.

My Realization Moment
So what went wrong? I know you’re dying to know 😉

Halfway through said shoot, I was directed into a pose that had me face-down, hips raised, slowly pulling down my underwear.
I couldn’t see the camera. I had no idea how I looked. All I could think was, Is this too revealing? Did we even talk about this beforehand?
We hadn’t.
There’s nothing inherently wrong with that pose. However, the issue was the complete lack of discussion around boundaries & comfort levels beforehand.
This experience made it painfully clear that empowerment isn’t in marketing—it requires intention, respect, and thoughtfulness. It showed me exactly what I needed to do differently.

Creating a Better Boudoir Experience
As unsettling as that experience was, I’m grateful for it. It gave me clarity on the kind of photographer I want to be and the kind of experience I want to provide.
If the process doesn’t feel good, the final images won’t either.
That’s why I approach boudoir sessions with careful thought & intention. My goal is to make every client feel safe, valued, and radiant—not just in their photos but throughout the entire experience.
Boudoir is about more than just how you look—it’s about how you feel.
I know it takes courage to step in front of the camera in such a vulnerable way, and I don’t take that trust lightly.
