Let’s face it: we live in a world obsessed with weight, appearance, and quite frankly, perfection. Diet culture and fatphobia are voiced around us from childhood and it just gets louder as we get older. When it comes to photography, media, and modelling, many strides still need to be made – when we think of models, we often, even subconsciously, conjure up images of able-bodied, white, thin women. It is not representative of the world around us, the beauty nor the power that exists in diverse bodies. At Embodied Art Boudoir, this is what I push to showcase because all bodies are beautiful & there’s art in everyone. There is no need for losing weight for a Boudoir Session.
One extremely pervasive notion that tends to exist around bodies is postponement. The idea that one should wait until they reach a “perfect” look, or lose a few pounds, and then they can do the thing they have always wanted to. It is time to stop letting this negative notion win – that we can’t exist, do the things that make us feel alive, loved, and excited because we have been taught to think we somehow deserve less due to our body type. Postponement & perfectionism stop people before they even start. So, let’s fight that, starting with a boudoir session.
I want everyone who steps into my studio to feel confident to highlight their power, but I do recognize that everybody is at a different stage of their self-love journey, so I always meet you where you are, encouraging you to fall in love with yourself all over again.
Another Lens
As a photographer, I love to showcase diverse women living their best, confident lives! Posing is one of my favorite things about being a photographer, creating elegant and powerful shapes, expressions, and stories with your body. And don’t worry, you don’t need to know how to make a ‘sexy face’ because I’ll guide you through your expressions for real emotional depth in your photographs.
My mission is to create photographs that you look at in awe! So if you’re not already looking at your body in awe, no matter what it looks like, I invite you to see yourself from another lens through a boudoir photoshoot.
You won’t find big mirrors in the studio space, so you can tunnel vision into the parts of your body you’re not happy with. Instead, I’m going to show you how the people who love you see you.
You, from a perspective you may have never seen before. You, who are alive and good and loved for who you are. You, who will look at your images and think “wow, that’s really me??” – YES, THAT’S ALL YOU. You are fucking gorgeous and perfect right now!!
At Embodied Art Boudoir, we’re creating a body-positive container for you to connect to your body and transform your internal dialogue through pampering, posing, guided meditation, and the celebration of your body as art.
Boudoir at Any Size aka You don’t need to lose another 15 lbs, you’re already enough.
If you are feeling self-conscious about your body because of changes – maybe you’ve gained some weight, given birth, had surgery – whatever it might be, a boudoir photoshoot could be exactly what you need to appreciate your body from new angles and eyes. The images can show you just how beautiful you are at any weight and changes. They will be something you can see everyday on your wall or an album to browse through curled up in bed. You deserve to recognize and celebrate your inner and outer beauty regularly.
There is no need to lose weight or change a thing about yourself before your boudoir session. You don’t need to learn how to hide your stomach in poses or make your arms look slimmer. We are going to capture you beautifully and I promise you will be happy with your images.
Instead of dieting and depriving yourself,, spend the days and weeks before your session living a well-rounded life, full of things that make you feel joyful and fulfilled. Incorporate a lot of laughter and times with people who lift you. Move for pure enjoyment and for the rush of endorphins – this can be spinning, dancing, walking, chair yoga, whatever gets your body moving, it will do wonders. Eat balanced meals, get lots of deep sleep and drink a TON of water!
Despite the amazing folks working to reclaim the word ‘fat,’ pushing the body positivity movements, society continues to lag. Thinness and able-bodied bodies are still celebrated as the ideal, and the notion to change through diet culture is pervasive. There is simply not enough accurate, respectful diversity nor representation of different bodies across media mediums. I want to change that!
I also want to challenge everyone to reflect on their notions on internalized fatphobia and the diet culture that you may hold. Sometimes, people don’t even realize they hold them. I invite you to hold space for growth, hold yourself accountable, re-learn and unlearn social constructs as it’s imperative for growth in self-love for yourself and others!
What is your inner critic saying about you when you look in the mirror? Next time you hear it, take a moment to directly challenge it & replace it with an affirmation that energizes you, not drains you.
