In Conversation With Melissa Smith of High Vibe Mindset

We’re back, baby! With a podcast so nice, we decided to do it twice.

If you haven’t read my first post about my first episode with Melissa (who is btw, my BFF and business partner!!) you can read it here.

Today’s post is a bit different, as our conversation focussed on body image and 7 mindset tips for body confidence!

Up Level Your Mindset

For those of you who dont know, I am a very practical thinker! So my practical self loved it when Melissa suggested we offer 7 tangible tips that listeners can implement in their lives.

Let’s get into them!

Tip 1: Change your perspective, change your experience

If you’re stuck in the mindset of, “Once I lose those 10 pounds, I’ll be happy!” or, “When I can fit into that dress, life will be complete,” it’s time to flip the script.

Our body image is more than just our waistband. It includes our thoughts, emotions, and the physical experience we have in our body.  We can choose how we perceive our bodies!

This doesn’t mean getting to a place of body love, necessarily. This isn’t achievable for many people, for many reasons. Body neutrality is just as powerful!

How do you go about applying this?

Start by noticing. When you start noticing things about your body, and your mind wonders to casting judgment or disapproval, bring attention to your thought and with a deep breathe, choose to change that thought.

Tip 2: Curate your social media experience

I love social media, okay!? But – boundaries are important because it’s easy to be influenced by pages and influencers.

When you genuinely curate your social media, it helps alleviate comparison to the lives you see online. Social media is indeed a highlight reel (pun intended) and we see 1% of a person’s day/life.

Recently, I noticed that I was getting into a habit of obsessively scrolling and consuming social media. I didn’t like what it was doing to my mindset/mood. So, to break this habit, I deleted the social media apps on my phone for an intentional break. This was a temporary measure to stop my habit that had become embedded in my day to day.

If you are feeling dependent and constantly reaching for that social media hit, you also may benefit from a little break.

You can also:

  • Mute/unfollow accounts that are upsetting or triggering you (no one knows when you mute someone!)
  • Seek out pages that are inspiring and that build you up including diverse bodies, perspectives, and lifestyles.
  • Set time frame boundaries so that you are notified when you are spending too much time on certain apps.

How do you use social media for the betterment of your mental wellbeing?

Tip 3: Stop making up stories

Comparisons and false narratives are ruining your day.

Whenever you judge yourself against someone else’s life, you are doing both yourself and the other person a huge disservice.  Stop making assumptions and stop judging yourself!

Tip 4:  Build your confidence

I grew exhausted of not being kind to myself.

I was able to extend kindness to strangers and people in my life, but it stopped at me. Alongisde my *loud* inner critic, I noticed I would stare at my flaws every time I looked in the mirror.

So, I challenged myself to find something positive to say about myself after walking by a mirror.  It can be as simple as “My eyebrows look legit!”

I encourage everyone to challenge themselves to do this! Compliment yourself!!!

If you’ve been beating yourself for years, and a critical lens has become almost habitual, you can break this by building confidence and self-validation. The more you practice this, the easier it becomes. Be patient with yourself.
