Jenn & Brent got married in the most them way possible – doing something they loved together – in this backpacking wedding in the Colorado Rockies. Have you ever considered a camping wedding? It’s a unique and adventurous option for nature-loving couples!
This story is about Jenn & Brent, a fun and adventurous couple living in Denver. These two got engaged during a backpacking trip together in Yosemite National Park in California, so it makes sense that they would tie the knot on a backpacking trip as well!
Even though their original wedding plans (to get married in Yosemite, where they got engaged) were cancelled because of the pandemic, they had an incredible experience during their camping wedding in the Rocky Mountains in Colorado.
When they met, Brent hadn’t had much experience or interest in backpacking. Jenn really got him into it, and now it’s one of their favorite things together. They’re explored all over the Rockies in Colorado since living here! I truly believe that for a couple that thrives on adventure, intimacy, and simplicity, a backpacking elopement is a beautiful way to celebrate the love you share (and its social distancing-friendly!).
Jenn & Brent brought the sweetest and cutest pup, their girl Sierra, who wore a dashing tux and boutonniere for this backpacking wedding. And she had my favorite dog accessory – a backpack to carry her own supplies! Too cute.
For this camping wedding, we decided to hit the trail in the Colorado Rockies not far from Denver and Idaho Springs. Starting on a Sunday to avoid summer crowds, this beautiful late-September day was also COLD! Good thing hiking is a great way to warm up!
We reached our destination – a stunning alpine lake – after 6 miles of hiking with all our backpacking gear, camera gear, TWO bottles of champagne, cookie sammies, two wedding outfits, and a gorgeous bouquet made of silk flowers. I’m still not sure how it all fit, but we made it work! The golden fall trees and alpine bushes, fun water crossings, and Sierra’s doggie energy kept us all happy and entertained during the hike.
When we got to the lake, we set up our camp and Jenn & Brent got ready for their ceremony. They said their vows before sunset and the temps plummeted. It was getting to be too cold for hanging out by the lake, in the 30s, so we decided to make dinner and save the rest of the fun camping wedding festivities for the next day.
The morning brought the sun, which helped defrost us to complete Jenn & Brent’s backpacking elopement. They self-solemnized and signed their marriage certificate with Sierra looking on. We took more beautiful photos and they got to enjoy their first morning of married life at a stunning and private alpine lake in the fall. No technology, no distractions, no drama. Pure enjoyment of nature, hiking, being outside, and being in each others’ company.
Pro Tip: Cookie sandwiches make an amazing portable, backpacking wedding dessert! Jenn & Brent got theirs from a local Colorado bakery that makes mouth wateringly good sweets – they lasted the entire trip in a tupperware in a hiking backpack!
