The Impacts Of Fast Fashion On The Planet & Beyond
Fast fashion brands like Boohoo, Shein, and H&M seem to be growing in popularity daily. They are affordable, trendy” and accessible to the average consumer. The problem? They are at the expense of vulnerable workers’ human rights, and it is decimating the environment.
The conditions that many fast fashion brand workers endure are inhumane. They work wildly long hours, often 14-16 hours a day, 7 days a week, for below-living wages and in dangerous conditions.
Fast fashion’s environmental toll is staggering.
Most discarded clothing, whether falling apart from poor quality or ditched for the next trend, ends up in landfills or incinerators, not recycled or donated. With fabrics taking up to 200 years to decompose, they continue polluting our land and oceans.
Beyond waste, the industry fuels:
- Water pollution: Textile factories dump toxic chemicals like lead and arsenic into rivers and oceans, harming marine life and communities. Bangladesh alone sees 22,000 tons of toxic waste enter its waterways yearly.
- Carbon emissions: Mass garment production guzzles energy, and synthetic fabrics are made from fossil fuels.
- Deforestation: Fibers like rayon and viscose contribute to logging ancient rainforests, disrupting ecosystems and food supplies.
- Toxins in clothing: Harmful chemicals lurk in every step of production, affecting both the planet and our health.
Ethical shopping means choosing brands that align with your values. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed, but mindful choices are powerful. Your dollar shapes the industry’s future. Our empowerment & self-care shouldn’t come at the cost of other people’s freedom & well-being. It allows us to give back and do the right thing, pushing companies to do the right thing or risk losing shoppers.

What makes a lingerie brand “ethical”?
Ethical companies relate to the social impact & moral impact that a company operates under. To be ethical, a company must be transparent about the type of fabric it uses and its supply chain, including workers treatment.
If a company has nothing to hide, it should be excited to show how it operates. As a consumer, you can find the truth with resources like Good On You.
Sustainability goes hand in hand with ethics. Thoughtful brands design timeless pieces with durable fabrics, ensuring longevity and less waste. They prioritize materials like organic cotton, linen, hemp (when responsibly sourced), and recycled textiles for a lower environmental impact.
Where To Shop For Ethical Lingerie?
What we wear under our clothes deserves thought—especially for a boudoir photoshoot!
Look for pieces made using sustainable materials & natural fabrics like cotton, bamboo, or recycled materials. You should also seek out items with low-impact dyes or waterless production methods.

1. Shop Your Own Closet First
You might already own lingerie-worthy pieces for your boudoir shoot—think scarves, dresses, or even sheets! Check out this blog for packing inspiration.
2. Re-make And Re-design
You can re-jig your old clothing you don’t tend to reach for anymore, like a lacy dress or silk pyjamas, and take them to an alteration shop, and voila! You have new pieces!
Some further inspiration:
- Repurpose old panties into soft, no-scratch cleaning cloths.
- Compost 100% cotton pieces (just remove elastics and tags first).
- Drop lingerie at a textile recycling point for a second life.
- Get creative—turn them into pillow stuffing, hair ties, plant holders, or even a quilt.
- Reuse bra padding as shoe inserts to help maintain their shape.

Girlfriend Collective
Girlfriend Collective focuses primarily on basic pieces. All undies are made with recycled plastic water bottles—and can be recycled again through its “ReGirlfriend initiative” when you no longer need ‘em. Girlfriend Collective is one of my favorite companies for the product’s amazing fit & durability. I have leggings from here that have lasted 8+ years of heavy use! I’ve literally skinned my knees and gotten bitten by my dogs in these leggings and they’ve stayed flawless.
THISTLE AND SPIRE
Thistle and Spire is a small, female-founded brand that emphasizes inclusion, empowerment, and social causes like LGBTQ+ support. They use some recycled materials and eco-friendly packaging, and lean toward ethical values. My clients are always raving about this brand! ALWAYS!
Thief & Bandit
Thief & Bandit are creating pieces that would POP in a boudoir shoot. All their bralette & high-waisted underwear feature gorgeous hand-drawn prints on organic fabrics that are made to order using in-house silkscreens and organic jersey fabric.

Ethical Lingerie Is Made To Last
The cold, hard truth is that lingerie contributes to around 10% of annual global carbon emissions, with 60% of the fabric being synthetic & derived from fossil fuels. The dying process also contributes to 20% of global wastewater. And that’s just the environmental impact.
Lingerie should make us feel good while empowering us to embrace our femininity. Paradoxically, the majority of textile workers are female and are being treated inhumanely for our lingerie!
But it doesn’t have to be like this.
While I have highlighted some brands that are making a difference, the ultimate accountability falls on us, consumers, to make mindful decisions when shopping for lingerie. The best way to do this is to pick brands that align with your principles & morals. Dont forget to spread the word with family & friends!
