Brooke and Matt enjoyed a fun afternoon exploring Lake Garda Italy for this couples photography session. We found passageways that seemed to disappear after turning around and a tiny, secluded cove nestled below the ancient castle.
This story is about Brooke & Matt. These two are from South Carolina and now living in Vicenza, Italy, a gorgeous small city near Venice in the north.
Brooke and Matt grew up in the same small town and crossed paths many times through mutual friends and nearby houses, but didn’t actually meet until three years ago! They finally traded names when Brooke signed up for the gym Matt was working at.
The first time Matt asked out Brooke, she actually said no! But she said yes the next time, and they knew on their first date that they had a connection. Since then they haven’t gone more than a day without talking to each other.
They spent a lot of time apart during their relationship, so they take full advantage of their time together. They clearly have so much fun with each other, constantly teasing and making each other laugh!
For this couples photography session, we ended up driving to the beautiful old village of Malcesine. Malcesine is right on the coast of Lago di Como, or Lake Garda. You might recognize Lake Garda’s smaller but flashier lake neighbor in Italy – Lake Como.
Lake Garda is stunning. It’s a long lake where you can see the other side on clear days, but not on cloudy days. Around the lake are over 20 small towns, each of them beautiful and unique in their own right, but we were enchanted by the lakeside castle and mountaintop gondola in Malcesine.
If you’re ever in the area, you MUST visit Malcesine. It’s one of the most beautiful and ancient of the towns around Lake Garda. And it’s the perfect location for this couples photography session. And bonus – some of the best pizza I had in Italy was in a restaurant on the water here.
On a Sunday afternoon, Brooke, Matt, and I drove out to Malcesine and set out to reach the lake by foot. The day was cloudy, clouds hanging so low we couldn’t see the tops of the nearby mountains.
We planned to walk around the beautiful old village of Malcesine before taking the cable car to the top of a nearby mountain – Monte Baldo. But as the time passed, the top continued completely fogged up and we decided instead to stay in Malcesine. It’s a tiny town so we managed to explore pretty much all of it during our afternoon together. And we found the most beautiful secluded cove below the castle.
We stopped at a cute cafe for a drink, ducked into an old antique store in search of a thermometer sign, and saw the cutest old, snaggletoothed English bulldog sleeping in his front yard.
The whole day, Brooke and Matt laughed and explored the town together hand in hand. It was the perfect afternoon spent exploring and enjoying each others’ company in a beautiful Italian daydream on Lake Garda.
This session really inspires and gave me lots of ideas for a romantic Lake Garda Italy elopement. Let me know if you’re in need of an Italy wedding photographer!
