In Conversation With Embodied Art Boudoir’s Hair & Makeup Artist
Every woman who steps into Embodied Art Boudoir gets celebrity treatment: hair and makeup – the works! You are getting pampered, girl.
Meet Haley Johnson, the talented gal behind the incredible hair & makeup looks at the studio! Haley’s been with me for years and our dynamic goes beyond how damn talented she is – Haley truly embodies & understands the values & mission of EAB. For that, I applaud you, Haley!
To showcase Haley’s talent, and for a little sneak peek into what a boudoir day shoot entails, I interviewed her! Read on to understand Haley’s approach to beauty, trends, and the deeply profound impact of her work.

Makeup & Hair As A Genuine Celebration Of Self-Love
I started by asking Haley what she loves the most about her role, to which she shared, “I love getting to support & celebrate women on their self-love journey. I am always inspired by Gabby and by our clients.”
We celebrate real, authentic women on their self-love journey at EAB. Haley compliments this by enhancing & accenting clients’ natural beauty, without altering who they are or making them feel disconnected.
The right makeup & hair can do wonders. “A couple of weeks ago, I had a client who started tearing up when she saw herself with her finished hair & makeup look. It brought me so much joy to see her smile and feel so confident. It’s why I love what I do so much!” Haley gushed.

To obtain the perfect look, Haley creates in collaboration with clients, always considering the outfits to compliment the vibe/feel of the shoot, before determining what color palette speaks to them best.
“I also really like to determine if they are a silver or gold jewelry person,” Haley explained. She asks plenty of questions, inviting clients to vocalize their preferences. Don’t love sparkle on the eyes? No problem! Love a bold lipstick? Beautiful! This is ALL about you, after all!

Boudoir Makeup & Hair Detials
There is no “go to” or “set” look for boudoir shoots.
Instead, Haley focuses on the person to customize her approach. She strives to emulate what a client may normally do, so it’s something they’re comfortable with. “It’s important that you still feel that you look like yourself, just with the volume turned up a bit,” Haley shared.
This can range from a very soft, natural glam – like this:

To a full flawless face with a bold lip & eye – like this:

Haley has a full range of foundations in her kit and a big range of different highlighter bronzer & blush palettes for fair, medium, and deep complexions to find the perfect match for each client.
She considers different skin types too, providing a variety of prep steps for dry, oily, and combination skin!

When it comes to hair, Haley gives everyone’s hair a little bit of movement & texture since it looks incredible in photos.
Similar to makeup, if a client typically likes her hair more straight, she may opt for a faux blowout with lots of body & volume. If clients have a wave to their hair, she leans into that with beachy waves or big ringlets.

Preparing For Your Boudoir Shoot & How To Make The Most Of Your Experience
Nerves are normal on the big day.
“What really feeds my soul is getting to be a positive and encouraging presence. I know how vulnerable it can feel to do a boudoir shoot, especially for the first time, so I like to share my experiences because we have all felt that nervousness, and I think it helps to know that you are not alone,” explains Haley.
One way to deal with nerves is to be prepared. Haley encourages you to focus a lot on your skincare pre-shoot! “The weeks leading up to your photo shoot, make sure to really stay on top of washing your face every morning and every night and using moisturizer!”
If you’re going to get your eyebrows waxed, do it seven to three days before to avoid any aggravated skin.
Exfoliate the night before your shoot and put a moisturizer on afterward (Haley suggests a face oil for the dry season!) Lotion yourself head-to-toe lotion and pop Aquaphor on the lips while you sleep.
If you have the time, get a haircut or fresh color ahead of your shoot as it can be hard to get an appointment last minute, so make sure to schedule that ahead of time!

Pamper Yourself – You Deserve It
Having a professional hair & makeup artist style you are an integral part of the boudoir shoot experience. Seriously – when’s the last time you were treated to a celeb pampering treatment!?
Ladies, you deserve the treatment. You deserve the self-care moment! And you deserve it post-boudoir shoot, too. Haley suggests blocking out at least one night a week to dedicate to the self-care practice of your choice. Keep the self-love alive before and after the shoot.
Are you ready to be pampered?!
