Discover Your Natural Beauty: Entering a Body Positive Boudoir Studio

Embodied Art Boudoir studio is rooted in body positivity, a space that invites you to feel safe, heard, and empowered. I sincerely encourage you to come to our Body Positive Boudoir Studio as you are: the focus of the shoot is to celebrate you as the work of art you already are. When you step into your session, I capture you in the space you’re in that day. A candid, timeless depiction of beauty – ‘imperfections’ and all.

Photography and the History of Body Positivity

It’s important to start the conversation around the origins of body positivity. It is rooted in the 1960s fat-positive movement, which challenged the status quo on medical biases, body discrimination and fat-shaming, and shifted the narrative into adopting authentic stories from bigger bodies and their experiences navigating this world. It was a very inspiring movement and helped pave the way for more widespread acceptance of diverse bodies.

The actual term “body positivity” emerged in 1996 by therapist Elizabeth Scott, writer and eating disorder advocate Connie Sobczak and Doctor Deb Burgard and has flourished ever since. But it can mean several things! The thing is, even without realizing it, we have biases, suggestions, and concepts in our mind from childhood of how our body “should” look. We’re hounded with “ideals” and judgement. It can be healthy to check in with yourself to see what it means to you, your body, and your relationship with your body. It’s complicated, for sure, and it’s not always an easy task, so be gentle with yourself.

When you strip everything away, body positivity suggests real; real bodies, real people, without any constraints due to our skin colour, our gender, our size, our age, or disability. At my studio, body positivity isn’t a passing trend.

What Does it Mean to Be  “a Body-Positive Boudoir Studio?”

I come from a place of zero judgement, and I am in absolute awe of all the brave souls who enter my studio. I strive to make you feel as comfortable and as bold as ever, while we strip back learned biases and society’s pre-conceptions of how we “should ” look. We will start by doing a guided meditation together, but don’t worry if this is unfamiliar for you, I’ll guide you through every step. I use this as a tool to welcome ease and energy for the shoot ahead and to drive a positive intention of self-compassion, self-worth, and self-love.

We will laugh together as we find poses that make you feel the most confident, and I will be there to help guide you through any awkwardness. Every session is between 60-90 minutes and each minute will bring out a distinct side of yourself. I will capture these surprising and raw moments, highlighting your fearlessness, strength, and sheer joy. To embrace yourself as a femme is almost an act of rebellion these days. So, I say, let’s be rebellious!

You Don’t Need to Change & I Won’t Change You

Let’s say ‘no’ to diet culture and the notion that you should trim or tone up prior to your session. Instead, I want to highlight your beauty and the beautiful body that carries you. There is no need to change who you are.

When it comes to lingerie, I leave this up to you! But I do encourage you to pick something that fits slights bigger, just to avoid those uncomfortable lines caused by too tight bras. Pick something sassy, sexy, and a color you love!

I do edit and enhance my photographs but I take a ‘light touch’ approach. This is important to me and essentially means that I modify colors to fit my brand, remove temporary blemishes such as pimples or bruises, smooth skin and clear any bumps or lines caused by straps. I’m not here to make you look like a different person in Photoshop. Instead, I highlight your existing beauty. So if you want a photographer who will slim you down in Photoshop, I’m probably not the best one for you.

To You, From You

These photographs are intended for you. I ask you to remove the idea that these “have” be created for a partner (if they are, power to you!) but let’s remove the implication that your body must be a certain way for anyone but yourself. Instead, consider the photographs as a special reminder of your power & reclaim your badass self!

Feeling At Home in Your Body

The journey of self-love is complicated, especially when the popular narrative is to do the opposite. With time, work, and patience, you can rewrite those popular narratives. It’s a defiant and empowering choice to not just tolerate your body but to witness its strength, beauty, and potential.

Boudoir photography is an intimate form of self-care and a beautiful way to leap out of your comfort zone – and catch yourself on the other end. Invite yourself to celebrate your boundless potential.
